The Family Chantel: Why Chantel Still Had To Pay Pedro Despite Divorce

Chantel and Pedro Jimeno’s divorce was a hotly debated topic among The Family Chantel viewers, and many 90 Day Fiancé fans had strong feelings about Pedro feeling entitled to Chantel’s income. The season finale of The Family Chantel season 4 revealed that Pedro wanted to divorce his wife officially and requested half of Chantel’s income. Many of The Family Chantel’s fans are angry with Pedro and baffled as to why the working real estate agent should have any claim over her money. Pedro and Chantel’s divorce settlement needs explaining, as it was confusing.

Chantel and Pedro were once a 90 Day Fiancé franchise golden couple, as they overcame tension with Chantel’s family and went on to star in their own spin-off show. However, Pedro’s feelings toward Chantel have dissipated between the third and fourth seasons. The Dominican Republic native appeared irritated by his wife and eager to terminate their five-year marriage. Pedro met with a divorce lawyer and learned that since he has been in the country for five years, he no longer needs Chantel to apply for his permanent citizenship. He then decided that he wanted half of her future income.

Chantel Still Had Financial Obligation To Pedro

Pedro’s divorce lawyer informed him that divorce did not change Chantel’s financial obligation to Pedro since she signed on to sponsor his K-1 visa and assume financial support. Pedro’s lawyer explained that Chantel would still have to financially support Pedro until he has been in the country for ten years. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website specifies that after signing an affidavit of support, “you accept legal responsibility for financially supporting the sponsored immigrant(s), generally until they become U.S. citizens or are credited with 40 quarters of work.”

The Ethics Of Pedro’s Request Are Disputed

While Pedro appeared to have a claim to Chantel’s income legally, many The Family Chantel fans are debating the ethics of his demanding her future earnings. Pedro declared that he feels responsible for Chantel graduating from nursing school and becoming a registered nurse, meaning he feels a portion of her earnings belongs to him. He even said that only requesting half of her earnings was fair.

However, fans of Chantel and Pedro might recall the couple discussing a prenup agreement. Though Chantel did not want to sign a prenup on the show, it was believed that she signed a deal to protect her inheritance. However, it’s since been revealed they never signed a prenup.

Pedro and Chantel aren’t the only 90 Day Fiancé franchise couple to discuss the topic of financial obligations. Kalani Faagata explored her options for divorcing Asuelu Pulaa and realized that her father, his visa sponsor, would still have a financial obligation to Asuelu. However, Pedro’s situation is incredibly irritating due to his sense of entitlement. Pedro is a working real estate agent who can financially support himself. It is audacious and out of line for The Family Chantel‘s Pedro to credit himself with Chantel’s success and demand her future earnings when he is fully employed.
