The Medical Condition That Welcome To Plathville’s Moriah Suffered From After Her Breakup
Now deep into its sixth season, reality TV series Welcome To Plathville follows the Plaths, a devout family from Georgia with a whopping nine children and a passion for singing together. As some of the eldest children have reached adulthood, the show has started to follow their individual paths, and some have even chosen to move away from home, breaking from some of the traditional norms with which they were raised.
One of the most prominently featured members of the family is Moriah, the second eldest daughter in the bunch. Her season arc revolves around her budding music career, her healing journey, and, more recently, the medical issue she struggles with as a result of a bad breakup. In the latest episode, Moriah got candid about the frightening condition she’d been battling—and not for the first time.
Moriah Was Candid About Her History With The Medical Issue
It seems that the medical issue with which Moriah struggles is alopecia, an autoimmune condition in which one’s hair falls out in clumps. Moriah shared with the cameras that, for her, she’d recently lost as much as half of her hair after going through the emotional turmoil of her latest breakup.
Apparently, Moriah had suffered similar hair loss when she was only three or four years old. Back then, her family had no idea what the reason behind her condition was, even after her mother Kim spent an extensive amount of time trying to do research about it. Moriah says her hair didn’t grow back until she was nearly eight.
In the present day, Moriah suspects that her breakup was the primary reason behind the flare-up. She noted that, after a past, more minor breakup, she had a few spots of hair loss, but nothing to the current degree. Moriah shared with the cameras how she thought her emotional state was affecting her physical state:
These last several months, I have noticed for myself at least, heartbreak triggers my alopecia. I think that it’s an outward reflection of what’s going on inside.
Moriah’s mother Kim was there to comfort her daughter when she broke down about her condition. Kim reminded her daughter how strong she was and how proud she was of her, hugging her closely to help her get through the moment. She even went on to joke that she’d be doing a “full background check” on the next guy Moriah chose to date.
Moriah Channeled Her Hurt Into Her Music
As a way to work through her hurt, Moriah has since written and recorded a new album of music which she plans on releasing. In the show, she invites some of her family members to the studio to listen to some of the tracks. One of the songs in particular, called “September,” touches on her experience with the horrible breakup.

The lyrics of the song painted a portrait of what the heartbreak felt like for Moriah:
I spent a cold year waiting for you
Staring at my door
I’m glad it’s not September anymore
I’m glad I’m not still thinking you’re the man
I thought you were before
Moriah shared with the cameras that she even wanted her ex to hear the songs as well, for she thought it was important for him to understand how he truly made her feel.
Moriah’s Family Is There To Support Her
After Moriah’s family listened to the song, their anger about how poorly Moriah had been treated by her ex was reignited again. Her father, Barry, wouldn’t even refer to the ex by his name, calling him “that guy.” Her eldest brother Ethan also shared that Moriah’s ex was the reason he and his sister’s relationship was so strained the previous year, something that the two had only recently been able to repair.
It seems the cause was Moriah’s heartbreak was a betrayal of an unfathomable level. After Moriah stepped out of the studio for some time alone, her family spoke about how her ex apparently had a girlfriend on the side that he had hidden from Moriah—and that he had a child with the other woman. Knowing this about her ex helped explain why he’d been so flaky with Moriah in the past, cancelling their dates at the last minute and being shady about his location.

Barry went on to express that, while he had only met Moriah’s ex once, he was surprised by him. “I have never met a master deceiver like that before,” he recalled of the encounter. He even went on to refer to him as “scum of the earth,” for his deception of his daughter. For his part, Micah said he’d never even gotten the chance to meet the man, so it was all a confusing mystery to him.
Ultimately, Moriah sharing her music and reflecting on her recent struggles created a nice moment for the rest of her family to come to her air. While her struggle with her alopecia continues, she did note that she now understands that her heartbreak is simply something she needs to get through and that will heal with time, and that creating her music will be instrumental in that process.
In the end, Moriah even invited her brother Ethan to sing as the guest on one of her tracks, bringing him into the recording booth to accompany her. For his part, Ethan also hadn’t been involved with music for quite some time, as the end of his own relationship had since pulled him away from his former hobby.
The latest season of Welcome To Plathville is currently available to stream on Max and Hulu. New episodes will continue to air each Tuesday, where viewers will be able to see how the rest of Moriah’s album preparation goes, including recording her very first music video with the help of her family members.
