90 Day Fiancé- David Can’t Start A Fundraiser For Sheila (His Tax Problems & Other Scandals Explained)

90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 6 alum David Dangerfield has several issues stopping him from starting a fundraiser for his girlfriend, Sheila Mangubat. This season, viewers watched David, who is deaf, travel to The Philippines to meet Sheila for the first time in person. David visited Sheila’s dilapidated home and was shocked by the level of poverty she had to live in. Unfortunately, Sheila’s mom had an accident in the house and died after falling through the dangerous stairs during David’s stay.

David has been doing everything to support grieving Sheila. That has included getting an estimate of $1725 to fix all the issues with Sheila’s shanty house. When Sheila asked if David could pay for the repairs, he said he could send money over time. He followed that up by asking Sheila if she could get a job and start contributing as well. David admitted to sending Sheila $3000 over the course of their relationship before his trip to The Philippines.

David Dangerfield Talked About A Possible Fundraiser For Sheila (But He Can’t Help With That)

Regarding helping Sheila financially, David has been under pressure from 90 Day Fiancé fans to start a fundraiser for Sheila’s home improvements. He addressed the notion in an Instagram post where he said he couldn’t start a GoFundMe because he couldn’t afford to pay the taxes on the donation money. In his interactions with followers in the comments, David further stated he couldn’t send the “to sale of house money” to The Phillippines. It’s clear that David is not going to start a fundraiser for Sheila. However, in his Instagram post, he urged fans to keep watching until the finale, which means something related to Sheila’s house could happen.

Why Do David’s Issues With The IRS Factor In?

David is wary of starting a fundraiser for Sheila because he is under the impression that he would have to pay taxes on whatever is collected. While the rules around paying taxes on fundraiser money are complicated, David has options if he were to go the fundraiser route. When donations reach $600, it triggers a 1099-K tax form, potentially making the money a taxable part of one’s income. However, according to the IRS, “Donations can be considered nontaxable gifts for tax purposes.” But, David’s situation is more complex, given that he would be making the fundraiser on behalf of Sheila.

David should consult a tax professional to flesh out the nuances of fundraising and see whether having to pay on the donations would even apply to him. In the comments of his fundraiser post, several people suggested taking the money he would have to pay for taxes out of the donation money. Regarding his issue with sending the money to the Philippines, interested followers also left advice on how to send the money. There’s no doubt that David really loves Sheila, so he is probably doing his best to figure out how to send her money for her home.

David seems to be pouring all his spare money into Sheila and their relationship. David stated that he makes $800 a week between his two jobs but that his life in Omaha is expensive, and it’s hard for him to send a lot of money. Since David said he couldn’t afford the mere $1725 for all of Sheila’s home repairs, that means that David is tight when it comes to the money he has available. In any case, David seems determined to build his life with Sheila, and 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days viewers should keep watching to see if David ends up spending more money on Sheila.

90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on TLC.
